The Mariinsky Academy of Young Opera Singers is an apprentice group at the Mariinsky Theatre. The Academy was established in 1998 as a workshop which allows young opera singers to hone their professional skills and prepare for the big stage.
The Academy’s trainees include graduates of musical universities, students of conservatoires, and talented singers who had decided to leave their previous jobs and pursue a music career.
Apart from vocal training, the Academy’s curriculum includes such subjects as voice training, acting, foreign languages, and history of opera. Each of the Academy’s soloists practices on stage. They perform in repertoire productions, concert programmes, and concerts on tour. The soloists also take part in various festivals and master classes. Many productions of the Mariinsky Theatre are created for the young opera company of the Academy. Today, the ensemble has its own concert and opera subscriptions and partner projects with concert venues abroad.
Larisa Gergieva, People’s Artist of Russia, has been the Academy’s Director since the day of its foundation. She is an experienced vocal trainer, concert mistress, and jury member of many prestigious international competitions.
