Savva Khastaev was born in Ulan-Ude. Studied as a choral conductor at the Tchaikovsky Ulan-Ude College of Music and then at the Academic Music College of the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory, from which he graduated in 2004. Subsequently, in 2011, Savva graduated from the Faculty of Vocal Studies at the Moscow Conservatory itself (class of Professor Boris Kudryavtsev). While a conservatory student he toured with solo concert programmes to Germany, Argentina, Ukraine, the USA, Switzerland and Russia.

From 2011 to 2012 the singer was a soloist with the Moscow State Opera and Ballet Theatre for Young Audience named after Natalia Sats, and from 2012 to 2013 – with the Buryat State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre (Ulan-Ude); on the Buryat stage he has performed the roles of Radamès (Aida), Erik (Der fliegende Holländer) and the Young Gypsy (Aleko), and later, as a guest soloist, the role of Mario Cavaradossi (Tosca). Has also portrayed Radamès at the State Opera and Ballet Theatre named after D.K. Sivtsev–Suorun Omolloon (Yakutsk), Tebaldo (I Capuleti e i Montecchi) at the Kazakh State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after Abay (Almaty), Gonzalve (L’Heure espagnole) and Pollione (Norma) at the Irkutsk Regional Philharmonic, where subsequently, in 2023, he appeared as Pelléas in a concert version of Pelléas et Mélisande.

From 2013 to 2023 Savva Khastaev was a soloist with the Mariinsky Academy of Young Opera Singers. He made his Mariinsky Theatre debut in 2014, performing the role of Azamat in Bela. In January 2024 he joined the Mariinsky Opera Company.

In 2017 he performed the role of Paisii in a Mariinsky Theatre production of The Enchantress at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples.

Has taken part in world premieres of Leonid Klinichev’s operas Bela (2014) and The Cossacks (2016), held at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre, as well as in the premiere of St Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre production of The Story of Kai and Gerda (2016) and in premieres of productions of Aida (2018) and the opera Alexander Nevsky (2023) at the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania Branch of the Mariinsky Theatre.
