Marco Berriel was a premier danseur with Maurice Béjart’s company Ballet du XXe Siècle and Spain’s Compañia Nacional de Danza, and he also worked as a guest artist with various ballet companies. He made his debut as a choreographer with Jeu de dames (La Scala, together with Béjart). A pioneer of flamenco-fusion style, he has worked with such performers as Lola Greco, Joaquin Cortes, Merche Esmeralda and Carmen Cortés. In opera he has worked as a choreographer and stage director with the conductors Riccardo Muti, Zubin Mehta and William Christie and the stage directors Pier Luigi Pizzi, Robert Carsen, Yannis Kokkos, Giancarlo Del Monaco and Herbert Wernicke among others (Carmen, Die Sieben Todsünden, Turandot, Die Frau ohne Schatten, Salome, Der Fliegende Holländer, Don Carlo and Iphigénie en Aulide). Recipient of Spain’s Premio Nacional de Coreografía and prize-winner at the Certamen Coreográfico competition in Madrid.
