Alexander Raskatov

Composer Alexander Raskatov was born in Moscow. In 1978 he graduated from the Moscow Conservatoire in composition (class of Professor Albert Lehman).

Since 1979 he has been a member of the Russian Union of Composers and since 1990 he has been a member of the Russian Association of Contemporary Music and Staff Composer of Stetson University (USA). In 1994 he emigrated to Germany at the invitation of Mitrofan Petrovich Belyaev Publishing and has lived in Paris since 2007. He has received commissions from the Mariinsky Theatre, the Stuttgarter Kammerorchester, the Sinfonieorchester Basel (conducted by Dennis Russell Davies), the Dallas Symphony Orchestra (conducted by Jaap van Zweden), the London Philharmonic Orchestra (conducted by Vladimir Jurowski), the Asko-Schonberg Ensemble (Amsterdam) and the Hilliard Ensemble (London).

In 1998 Raskatov was awarded the Main Composition Prize at the Salzburg Easter Festival. In 2002 the disc After Mozart, featuring a work by Raskatov performed by Gidon Kremer and the Kremerata Baltica orchestra, won a Grammy award.

The composer’s discography includes recordings for companies including Nonesuch (USA), EMI (Great Britain), BIS (Sweden), Wergo (Germany), ESM (Germany), Megadisc (Belgium), Chant du monde (France) and Claves (Switzerland). In 2004 Dutch television made a special film about Raskatov’s concerto for viola and orchestra The Path featuring Yuri Bashmet and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev. Commissioned by the Dutch National Opera in 2008, Raskatov composed the opera A Dog’s Heart. The opera was performed eight times in Amsterdam and seven times in London (English National Opera). In March 2013 it will be staged at the Teatro alla Scala under the baton of Valery Gergiev.
