Hanne Loosen was born in Belgium and studied costume design at the Academy of Visual Arts in Maastricht in the Netherlands. Staff there included costume designers from Germany, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands, and she was able to work with such designers as Rien Bekkers and Erika Landertinger.
She designed the costumes for Chekhov’s Three Sisters at Stage Entertainment in Amsterdam. This production, directed by Hans Croiset, travelled to the Theatre Amsterdam and other major theatres in the Netherlands. She has also designed costumes for dance and opera productions in Berlin, Ingolstadt, Wolfsburg, Leuven (Belgium) and Maastricht (the Netherlands).
In 2008 she undertook an internship at the Technical University of Berlin in set design and scenography for her MA. With her Visual Tracks design she was a finalist for the scenery of the baroque angels in the Nikolaikirche in Berlin, which was commissioned by the Foundation City Museum Berlin. She worked as a set design assistant to Nigel Lowery at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin for Orlando Paladino, at the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music and the Flemish Opera in Antwerp for the opera Candide. She designed her first sets for The Tears of the Knife by Martinů in Berlin. Starting in September 2010 Hanne Loosen will receive a scholarship to live in Calgary (Canada) and design King Lear at the university theatre.
