Hugo Gargiulo

Set Designer, Actor, Writer, Stage Director

Born in Montevideo in 1965. While studying architecture, he also began his theatre training with Luis Cerminara in Montevideo. He made his debut in 1988 with Il Prinsokito, a play which won the Florencio Award as best children’s show. The first production he worked in Montevideo was Play, Stop, Autoreverse. He takes part in other shows in Uruguay, and in 1994, he discovered Daniele Finzi Pasca and the aesthetics of the “theatre of the caress.”

Gargiulo moved to Switzerland in 1996 and began to work with the Teatro Sunil. In 1998 he married Maria Bonzanigo, with whom he also shares close artistic as well as personal bonds. A man of incredibly diverse talents, Gargiulo has been involved in many Teatro Sunil productions as an actor, writer, assistant director, director and set designer. Productions he has worked on include Così si tirava il destino, Aitestas, Visitatio, Cyrano & Bergerac, Di sogno e volo and Tres tristes tangos.

Gargiulo also writes stories. His anthology Las habrían llamado brujas won two of the most important literary contests in Uruguay.

He participates in large-scale projects staged by Daniele Finzi Pasca and other directors. For the Cirque du Soleil’s show Corteo, he coached the performers alongside Antonio Vergamini; he joined the production team for the closing ceremony at the Winter Olympics in Turin and for Cirque Éloize he coaches replacements performers for the shows Nomade and Rain.

Starting in 2007, he has focussed on set designing and created the designs for the show Nebbia, co-produced by the Cirque Éloize and the Teatro Sunil, which enjoyed great success throughout the world. In 2010 he created the sets for Donka to mark one hundred and fifty years since the birth of Chekhov (co-produced by the Teatro Sunil and the Chekhov International Theatre Festival).

He also organises and co-ordinates touring concerts in Switzerland and abroad, and has been directing acting workshops for several years now.

Since 2000 Gargiulo has been Artistic Director at Rassegna la Darsena, a small workshop devoted to experimentation and research which is located in Magadino. As a set designer, he loves to create amusing and poetic stage props which play an active role in creating a dreamy and clown-like world.

In 2011, together with Maria Bonzanigo, Daniele Finzi Pasca, Julie Hamelin and Antonio Vergamini he founded the Finzi Pasca Company, bringing together the Teatro Sunil and the production company Inlevitas.
