Costume Designer
Born in Datteln (Germany) in 1969, Bernd Skodzig studied stage and costume design under Professor Jürgen Rose at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart between 1990 and 1995. Upon graduating, he worked as a personal assistant to Mr Rose and as a freelance curator for the Textiles and Dress Department of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Bernd Skodzig has created costumes for many theatre, dance and opera productions in Berlin at such venues as the Deutsches Theater, the Sophiensaele, the Jüdisches Museum, the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz and in Dusseldorf at the Schauspielhaus. In 2006 he created the costumes for Tankred Dorst’s new production of Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Bayreuth Festival and in 2007 he designed costumes for the world premiere of Hans Werner Henze’s concert opera Phaedra (production by Peter Mussbach, with spatial arrangement by Olafur Eliasson at the Berliner Staatsoper Unter den Linden). In 2008 he created the costumes for Falk Richter’s production of Kabale und Liebe at Berlin’s Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz and in 2009 for Oscar Wilde’s Salome, directed by Ulrich Rasche at the Schauspiel in Stuttgart. Bernd Skodzig also drafted the costumes for Wilhelm Meister at the Schauspielhaus in Frankfurt in 2010. In 2011 he worked on Marie-Louise Bischofberger’s production of Pierre Corneille’s Illusion Comique, which premiered at the Dusseldorf Schauspielhaus as well as Roland Schimmelpfennig’s reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet under the direction of Oliver Reese at the Frankfurt Schauspielhaus.
Bernd Skodzig has collaborated with Sasha Waltz & Guests since 1999. He designed the costumes for Dialoge 99/1, Dialoge 99/2 and for the dance pieces Körper, noBody and insideout at the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz. He also worked on her 2007 choreography of Berlioz’s Roméo et Juliette for the Opéra National de Paris. In 2009 he created the costumes for Sasha Waltz’s latest Dialoge projects Dialoge 09 – Neues Museum in Berlin and Dialoge 09 –MAXXI in Rome, followed by 2010’s pieces Métamorphoses and Continu, performed at the Schauspielhaus in Zurich and at the Festspieltage in Salzburg among other places. He made his debut at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan in 2012 with his costume designs for Hector Berlioz’s Roméo et Juliette.
Bernd Skodzig lives and works as a freelance artist in Berlin and at London’s Spitalfields and is regularly invited to speak as a guest professor at the Universität der Künste Berlin.
