Rostislav Protasov was born in 1968 in the city of Kostyantynivka, Donetsk Region. Graduated from Kostyantynivka Industrial Technical College. He subsequently studied at the Moscow State Institute of Culture (specialising in directing mass spectacles) and graduated from Moscow’s Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS) in 2012 with a degree in theatre directing (Department of Musical Theatre, Roman Viktyuk’s workshop).

Since 2000 Rostislav Protasov has worked at Moscow’s Helikon Opera, where he currently serves as Deputy General Director – Artistic Director for Artistic and Production and Technical Issues. Has designed numerous productions for the theatre, including Aida, Madama Butterfly, The Tsar’s Bride, The Telephone, The Medium, The Island of Tulipatan, The Emperor of Atlantis, Seven Deadly Sins, La Voix humaine, Mr Georg Ots, A Midwinter Night’s Dream, The Snow Maiden School, The Snow Queen. Global Warming and others. Has also directed productions for the company, including the opera Aleko, gala concerts such as Martian Opera, Stag Party at a Circus Arena, Stag Party at a Football Game, Stag Party at an English Club, Stag Party at a Museum and Christmas Opera Ball, as well as the musical performances Flax and The Light of the Star of Bethlehem.

In 2015 he designed the set and costumes for Andrey Selivanov’s production of Fatal Inheritance based on the play by Nikolai Rudkovsky.

In 2024 Rostislav Protasov designed the set for Sergey Novikov’s production of Salammbô at the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia.

Collaborates with the Elena Obraztsova Foundation. In 2017 he directed a concert performance of the opera La Fille du régiment at the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, a gala concert of young opera stars at the World Festival of Youth and Students in Sochi, and served as an expert for the Young Talents Laboratory and director of the gala concert at the Tavrida All-Russian Youth Educational Forum. In 2018 he directed the Elena Obraztsova Opera Ball in honour of Franco Zeffirelli’s anniversary (at the State Kremlin Palace) and a concert performance of the opera Eugene Onegin at the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory.

Rostislav Protasov is the principal expert in the “Set Designer” category and, in 2021–2022, was the director of the opening and closing ceremonies of the ArtMasters National Open Championship of Creative Competences. Under his guidance the championship finalists’ performances were staged: A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Winzavod Centre for Contemporary Art, 2021) and Pushkin Squared (Gradsky Hall, 2022).
