Antonio Romero Villalba was born in Barcelona. In 1997 he graduated from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Subsequently Antonio pursued further studies at Barcelona’s Institut del Theatre, graduating in 2004 with a specialisation in scenography. From 2005 to 2007 he also studied scenography at London’s Central Saint Martins.
Has worked in theatre, film, and television.
In 2004 he collaborated with Aktino Films in Barcelona. From 2004 to 2009 he worked at the Dream Factory and Artefacto Escenografía scenography studios.
Subsequently served as Assistant Technical Director at the Teatro María Guerrero in Madrid (2011) and at the Teatros del Canal in Madrid (2012–2014).
From 2014 to 2017 Antonio Romero was Technical Director at the Teatro Real in Madrid, where he contributed to productions of operas such as Wolfgang Rihm’s Die Eroberung von Mexico, Kurt Weill’s Street Scene, Mauricio Sotelo’s El Público, Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea, Wagner’s Das Liebesverbot, Verdi’s Falstaff and Norma and Britten’s Peter Grimes.
Has been Assistant Set Designer for productions of Lohengrin and Werther at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, and for Mel Brooks’ musical The Producers at the Teatro Lope de Vega in Madrid.
In Valencia he worked on contract at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía and collaborated with the Espacio Odeón scenography studio as Technical Director and Set Designer.
Has designed exhibitions, conferences and other major events, including the set for a concert performance of Norma at the Alhambra Palace in Granada.
His scenography credits include productions at the Slovenian National Theatre in Maribor (Don Carlos), the Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège (I Capuleti e i Montecchi), the Grand Theatre in Łódź (Manon Lescaut), the Korean National Opera in Seoul (Attila and Il trovatore), the Theater Erfurt (Peter Grimes), the Teatro Antico di Taormina (Turandot) and the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville (Tristan und Isolde).
In 2024 he designed the set for Giancarlo del Monaco’s production of Rigoletto at the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia.
Has also contributed to Guillermo del Toro’s film Pan’s Labyrinth (2006).
