Alexei Votyakov graduated from the artistic and graphic design faculty of the Magnitogorsk State University in 1998, and in 2004 he completed a post-graduate degree at the St Petersburg State Academy of Theatre Art (specialising in set design and stage costume). He has designed over thirty-five productions for theatres in St Petersburg, Omsk, Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, Seoul, Magnitogorsk, Perm, Samara, Saratov and Nizhny Novgorod. He has worked with such directors as Kama Ginkas, Lev Erenburg, Viktor Kramer, Vyacheslav Kokorin, Sergei Puskepalis, Maxim Kalsin, Viktor Shraiman, Georgy Tskhvirava, Galina Byzgu, Yekaterina Gorokhovskaya, Valery Akhadov and Alexander Kladko among others. Prize-winner at the Golden Mask festival (2007–2008 season, production of The Tempest, Magnitogorsk Drama Theatre, directed by Lev Erenburg) and at the festivals Theatre without Borders and The Stage.
