Gaëtan Morlotti


Gaëtan Morlotti was born in Grenoble (France) and began his dance training in Ajaccio with Patricia Portal-Gozzi. In 1980 he continued his studies in Paris with Solange Golovine and Félix Malinowski, while in 1982 he entered the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris and trained with Serge Golovine.
The dancer joined the Ballets de Monte-Carlo in 1986, a company created by HRH the Princess of Hanover and directed by Pierre Lacotte and Ghislaine Thesmar. He performed the Ballet russe’s repertoire (Polovtsian Dances, Prodigal Son and Schéhérazade) and ballets by Pierre Lacotte. He also appeared in works by guest choreographers including Dennis Wayne and Jean-Christophe Maillot (The Miraculous Mandarin, 1987). The encounter between Morlotti and Maillot had a mutual impact that marked the beginning of a collaboration lasting over twenty-five years. In 1988 Morlotti followed Jean-Christophe Maillot to the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Tours where he performed productions by the latter including Cliché I, Cliché II, Cliché III, Thème et quatre variations, Le Jardin jeux d’amour, Lundi matin 11 heures, Le Voyage d’hiver, Du haut de..., Ubuhuha, After All, Naranjas e citrons (in collaboration with Ramón Oller), Lueur d’amour and Casse-Noisette Circus. As part of the festival Le Chorégraphique established by Jean-Christophe Maillot in Tours, Morlotti collaborated with, amongst others, Christine Bastin, Jean Gaudin and Ramón Oller.
In 1993 he returned to Monaco where Maillot was appointed Choreographer-Director of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo. He performed major roles in Jean-Christophe Maillot’s ballets created for him including Home, Sweet Home, Dov’è la luna, Vers un pays sage, Concert d’anges, Romeo and Juliet, Duo d’anges, In volo, Recto Verso; L’Îîle, Cinderella, Opus 40, Entrelacs, Œil pour œil, The Sleeping Beauty, D’une Rive à l’autre, Les Noces, Miniatures, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Faust, Altro Canto II, Fauves, Norma at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, Schéhérazade, Daphnis et Chloé, Opus 50, Swan Lake and Choré.
Gaëtan Morlotti’s repertoire includes key roles of the Ballet Russe’s repertoire such as Schéhérazade, The Firebird and Pétrouchka by Michel Fokine as well as ballets by George Balanchine.
He has collaborated with a great number of contemporary choreographers who have created roles and works for Gaëtan Morlotti. Among them are Chris Haring (Sacre: The Rite Thing), Maurice Béjart (Le Sacre du printemps, Boléro), Jiří Kylián (Bella Figura, Sechs Tänze, Return to a Strange Land, Les Noces), Millicent Hodson (Le Sacre du printemps), Johan Inger (Walking Mad), Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (Mea Culpa), Lionel Hoche (Balistik, Hiatus), Jacopo Godani (Beyonders), Itzik Galili (Blue Grass), Kevin O’Day (The Time It Takes), Marcia Barcellos (Very Small Creatures), Lucinda Childs (The Chairman Dances, Concerto), Serge Bennathan (Image d’une traversée), William Forsythe (The Vile Parody of Address), Nacho Duato (Duende), Angelin Preljocaj (Le Spectre de la rose), John Neumeier (Pétrouchka), Karole Armitage (I Had a Dream) and Bertrand d’At (Dichter Liebe).
In 2002 at the Monaco Dance Forum, Gaëtan Morlotti first appeared as a choreographer. Le Spectre éléctrique was his first production, created with DJ Spooky. In 2006 he collaborated with painter Ernest Pignon-Ernest for an itinerary in the city of Brest in homage to Jean Genet. In 2007 he created the ballet Mu for the Rosella Hightower École de danse in Cannes and assisted Jean-Christophe Maillot in the concept for the Jeux des petits États d’Europe opening ceremony in Monaco. In 2009 as part of ventenary celebrations of the original Ballets russes he created Hommage à l’Après-midi d’un faune. On numerous occasions he has presented his ballets at the festival Printemps des Arts in Monaco. For the Ballets de Monte-Carlo and as part of the project Young Choreographers’ Evenings he created Entre temps, Les Echevelés and Des-compositions 2012. He also formed the group Small Bang with which he has created several productions, notably Variations pour les colonnes which was presented at the Monaco Dance Forum. Since 2010 Gaëtan Morlotti has been the leader of pedagogical projects and works with students in collaboration with the National Education Department of Monaco.
