The Ural Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1936 by conductor Mark Paverman, who led it for more than thirty years, and since 1995 it has been directed by Dmitry Liss. Each season the ensemble presents over seventy programmes and more than one hundred concerts. Over the years, the orchestra has collaborated with the conductors Dmitri Kitayenko, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Klaus Tennstedt, Krzysztof Penderecki, Eliahu Inbal, Jean-Claude Casadesus, Valery Gergiev, Leif Segerstam, Alexander Lazarev, Mikhail Pletnev, Andrey Boreyko, Michiyosi Inoue, Hansjörg Albrecht, Fabio Mastrangelo, Daniil Raiskin. The soloists having performed with the orchestra include Mstislav Rostropovich, Eliso Virsaladze, Nikolay Petrov, Yuri Bashmet, Viktor Tretyakov, Natalia Gutman, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Peter Donohoe, Boris Berezovsky, Vadim Repin, Nikolay Lugansky, Denis Matsuev, Sergey Krylov, Olga Peretyatko, Olga Borodina and many others.
The orchestra has toured in twenty-one countries of the world playing on major venues including the Salle Pleyel (Paris), the Salle Arsenal (Metz), the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), the Berliner Philharmonie, the Beethovenhalle (Bonn), the Elbphilharmonie (Hamburg), the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Bunka Kaikan (Tokyo), the Tokyo International Forum, the Kennedy Center (Washington), the Tonhalle (Zurich), the Victoria Hall (Geneva), the Queen Elizabeth Hall (Antwerp), the St Petersburg Philharmonia, the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, the Rachmaninoff Hall of the Moscow Philharmonic Society, the Zaryadye Concert Hall, the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, the Mariinsky Concert Hall and the Mariinsky II.
The orchestra has taken part in numerous international festivals including Beethovenfest Bonn (Germany), La Folle Journée (France, Spain and Japan), the Festival de Radio France in Montpellier, the Festival International de Piano in La Roque d’Anthéron, the Festival de Musique Classique de Saint-Riquier, the Festival des nuits de la citadelle in Sisteron (France), the Arts Square festival (St Petersburg), the Stars on Baikal festival (Irkutsk), the Festival of the World’s Symphony Orchestras (Moscow), the Crescendo festival (Moscow, St Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Kaliningrad), the Eurasia International Music Festival (Yekaterinburg), the Russian Christmas at the Kennedy Center Festival (Washington, DC), the Harbin Summer Music Festival (China), the Boris Berezovsky Festival (Yekaterinburg). In 2016 it appeared with the Harbin Symphony Orchestra at the UN Headquarters in Geneva.
The orchestra has recorded thirty-eight albums in collaboration with Sony Classical, Warner Classics International and Mirare. The orchestra performances have been broadcast by Radio France, France Musique, TV Channels Arte, NHK and Culture. The Russian Light disc recorded with Olga Peretyatko in 2018 was given the OPUS KLASSIK award. Latest discs recorded by the orchestra (2019) include works by Gabriel Prokofiev for Signum Records.
The Ural Philharmonic Orchestra Charity Foundation founded in 1996, enabled the ensemble to buy magnificent instruments made by Carlo Bergonzi, Antonio Gragnani, Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume and other great makers.
