Born in 1975 in Tehran, Aidin Olyanassab began his musical journey in 1984 by taking up the tar. Received his foundational training under esteemed mentors such as Jamal Samavati, Zeydollah Tolu’i, Arshad Tahmasbi, Hossein Alizadeh and Dariush Talai, mastering both the preliminary and advanced traditional repertoire.
In 1999, following the release of his tar technique album Dar Gozar… (“In Passing…”), he expanded his musical expertise by studying classical piano at the Tehran Conservatory of Music with Dr Katrin Arefy, Tengiz Shavlokhashvili and Haynoush Makarian. His musical education continued under the guidance of Sophia Mikayelyan and Sergey Sarajian at the Komitas State Conservatory of Yerevan.
After returning to Iran, Olyanassab contributed to music education at the Art University of Tehran and the University of Guilan, teaching specialised courses in tar, piano, orchestration and ensemble performance. His creative output includes tar technique albums – Dar Gozar… (1999), Sargashteh (“Confused”) (2013) and Rad Pa (“Footprints”) (2018) – as well as a collection of vocal and orchestral works. Notable among these are the series Kamin Gah (“Ambush”; set to the poems by Hafez and Molana), Nehankhaneh Asrar (“A Secret Hideout”; on the poems by Akhavan Sales), Shabro (“At Night”; on the poems by Molana and Fereydoun Moshiri), Royaye Farda (“Dream of Tomorrow”; on the poems by Dr Gholamreza Alizadeh) and Vahm (“Illusion”; on the poems by Molana, Forough Farrokhzad and Dr Gholamreza Alizadeh), which also incorporates elements of electronic music.
A landmark moment in his career was his performance and recording of Haji Khanmammadov’s Concerto No. 1 for Tar and Symphony Orchestra (2nd Movement) with the Prague Metropolitan Orchestra – the first such concerto – followed by the presentation of the concerto Persia for two tars and orchestra, composed by the renowned Iranian maestro Alexander (Ali) Rahbari.
Since 2014 Aidin Olyanassab has led the Uranus group, performing his works in Iran and internationally, and in 2019 he founded Uranus Specialised Music Academy, furthering his commitment to the development and dissemination of traditional Persian music.
