Yan Fang is one of the most compelling young pianists of his generation, praised by Musical America as “a rising soloist with expanding international profile” and recognised by People’s Daily for performances that balance “Slavic grandeur” with “poetic nuance” and reveal “musical wisdom beyond his years”. Music Weekly wrote that, sixteen years after Lang Lang, a Chinese pianist had returned to the Mariinsky Theatre season, “capturing the essence of the Golden Age of pianism.” His artistry has been admired by Dang Thai Son, Gold Medalist of the International Chopin Piano Competition, who praised his professionalism, keen ear, rare ability to make the piano “sing or speak”, and remarkable balance of reason and emotion. Jerome Lowenthal, former Chair of Piano at the Juilliard School, described him as “a mature and authoritative piano-artist” who unites commanding pianism with imaginative and deeply personal musicality. A G. Henle Verlag Partner Pianist and Mentor at the UNESCO International Centre for Engineering Education Future Technology Education Base, Yan brings to the stage a vision of music as a bridge between cultures, generations, disciplines, and communities.

Yan became the first Chinese pianist in sixteen years, since Lang Lang, to appear in the official season of the Mariinsky Orchestra. Under the baton of Valery Gergiev, Artistic Director of the Mariinsky Theatre and the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia, he performed with the Mariinsky Orchestra at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. He later made his recital debut at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre, featured in VGTRK’s concert highlights of the Mariinsky Theatre. In the same year Yan was invited to the XX Mariinsky International Piano Festival, where he presented a solo recital as part of his Resonance Series and closed the festival with the Mariinsky Orchestra under Gurgen Petrosyan, performing Rodion Shchedrin’s Piano Concerto No. 5. Sold-out performances took place throughout Russia, including Moscow, St Petersburg (State Hermitage), Nizhny Novgorod, Vladikavkaz and the Komi Republic.

In the 2026 season Yan is scheduled for an extensive international tour across China, Russia, South Korea, Hungary, Germany, Israel, Belarus, Thailand and the USA. In 2025 he curated and performed a full Chinese works programme with the Tyumen Philharmonic Orchestra, featuring the Yellow River piano concerto, Ode to the Red Flag and Li Huanzhi’s Symphony No. 1, Wind from the Sea. Following its success, Yan invited the orchestra to China for a tour under Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Yuri Medianik, including an appearance at the China Shanghai International Arts Festival, one of the most influential arts festivals in the Asia-Pacific region.

Beyond the concert stage Yan is engaged in cultural advocacy, education, heritage initiatives and public service. He has appeared in nationally broadcast cultural events, including China’s Mid-Autumn Festival, where he performed Spring River in the Flower Moonlit Night with the renowned traditional instrumentalist Fang Jinlong. In 2025 Yan was invited as a soloist for multiple concerts commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, presenting several performances of the Yellow River piano concerto, a work closely connected to his artistic lineage through his teacher Chengzong Yin, one of the concerto’s composers and its original performers.

Yan was appointed Honorary Artist and Artist-in-Residence of the International Piano Centre at the Xiamen Institute of Technology and has long supported the cultural heritage of Gulangyu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. He curated Supporting Gulangyu’s World Heritage Bid and later gave a UNESCO Gulangsu World Heritage recital at Gulangyu Concert Hall. Selected by G. Henle Verlag and Sir Murray Perahia as one of only ten pianists worldwide, and the sole Chinese artist, he attended the Beethoven Masterclass and performed in Munich.

As an educator, Yan has given masterclasses at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music, the Harbin Conservatory of Music, and the Xiamen International Piano Centre. He was invited by the China National Arts Fund and premiered the winning work Along the Songhua River. Yan holds the prestigious Artist Diploma from the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Yefim Bronfman and became the first Piano Artist Diploma recipient in ten years. He earned his Master of Music from the Juilliard School, studying with Jerome Lowenthal and Hung-Kuan Chen, received his Bachelor of Music from New England Conservatory under Alexander Korsantia, and completed an Academy Diploma at the Colburn School under Dr Myong-joo Lee.
