Italian pianist Martina Frezzotti (born in 1986) is a former student of Lazar Berman and Eliso Virsaladze. She lived in Russia for seven years, studying at the prestigious Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory, where she completed her PhD. This background has enabled her to continue the legacy of the Russian piano school in Italy, where she currently holds the position of Piano Professor at the Conservatorio di Musica G. Tartini di Trieste.
Over the past year Martina Frezzotti has carried out an intense and wide-ranging artistic activity both as a concert pianist and educator. Her international season included major solo recitals, chamber music performances, masterclasses and radio broadcasts. She opened the season with a highly acclaimed all-Chopin recital at Carnegie Hall in New York, receiving a standing ovation for her interpretations of the Four Ballades, the 12 Etudes (Op. 25) and the Scherzo No. 2. Received an outstanding review from renowned critic Christopher Axworthy.
She has given piano masterclasses at prestigious institutions including the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest, the Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London, as well as at important universities and conservatories in other countries.
Throughout her career Frezzotti has performed in Russia, Italy, Japan, Spain, Germany, Austria, France, Poland, Bulgaria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Croatia, Greece, Great Britain and the USA.
Her growing international recognition is also reflected in her discography for Brilliant Classics / Piano Classics. Her first two albums are dedicated to female composers Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel and Amy Beach. These recordings have received critical acclaim from leading publications and radios including Gramophone UK, BBC Music Magazine, International Piano, Pianist Magazine, Piano News Deutschland, Rondo Magazine, American Record Guide, Fanfare, MusicWeb International, Classics Today, BBC Radio 3, Germany’s SWR 2 and RBB Kultur, Austria’s ORF Ö1, Switzerland’s SRF 2, New York’s WWFM. Her albums have twice received the distinction of “CD of the Month” and multiple five-star reviews. In particular, her Amy Beach album received exceptional praise from internationally renowned critics including Jed Distler, Jeremy Nicholas, Peter Quantrill, Patrick Rucker and David Hurwitz.
Her upcoming recording projects for include works for piano and orchestra by Clara Schumann for Piano Classics, piano works by Anton Arensky for Piano Classics, and works for piano and orchestra by Italian 20th century composer Bruno Bettinelli for Naxos Records.
Frezzotti has participated in numerous national and international piano competitions, obtaining awards and distinctions including the Gold Medal at the Vienna International Music Competition (2020), semi-finalist diplomas at the Prokofiev International Competition in St Petersburg (2013) and the International Competition for Young Pianists in memory of Vladimir Horowitz in Kyiv (2012), and 1th prize at the Brest International Piano Competition (France, 2013). In 2015 she was among the four Italian pianists competing in Warsaw’s XVII International Chopin Piano Competition.
For the upcoming academic year she is pursuing a master’s degree in musicology at the University of Oxford, where her research project focuses on Soviet musicologist Boleslav Yavorsky and his legacy related to the interpretation and reception of Johann Sebastian Bach, a topic on which Martina Frezzotti is currently writing a book titled The Gospel According to Bach.
