Vadim Monastyrsky, born in 1945 in Leningrad, began his journey in music at Moscow’s Gnesins State Music and Pedagogical Institute where he graduated in 1970 from the class of Theodor Gutman, a disciple of Heinrich Neuhaus. Vadim further honed his skills in the institute’s postgraduate programme under the same mentor, graduating in 1973.
Vadim Monastyrsky received the Bronze Medal at the International Liszt–Bartók Piano Competition in Budapest (1976), the Gold Medal at the Handel Festival in Halle (East Germany, 1979) and the Grand Prix du Disque at the International Liszt Recording Competition in Budapest (1980).
His performances have taken him across the globe, with appearances in Russia, Ukraine, Hungary, Germany, Italy, Spain, Canada, the USA, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia and South Africa. Notable venues include the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the Alte Oper Frankfurt, the Jerusalem Theatre, the Sydney Opera House and the Shanghai Grand Theatre. He has also participated in festivals in Burgos (Spain), Pontlevoy (France) and New York.
A respected jury member, Vadim Monastyrsky has judged at several national and international competitions in Lisbon, Hong Kong, Orenburg, Arizona and Germany. His teaching career spans across such institutions as the Ufa State Institute of Arts and subsequently the Rimsky-Korsakov Leningrad State Conservatory (Department of Special Piano). Since 1991 Vadim Monastyrsky has been a professor at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, and since 2018 he has also been a professor at the Department of Musical and Instrumental Training of the Institute of Music, Theatre and Choreography at the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia (St Petersburg).
The artist has been influential through his masterclasses in America, Europe, Asia and Australia, with his students winning prestigious competitions in Brussels, New York, Sydney and Cleveland.
His recorded lectures on Russian music have been particularly well-received in Japan, where they were recognised as the best educational project in 2020.
