Ilya Papoyan was born in St Petersburg in 2001. In 2024 he graduated from the Rimsky-Korsakov St Petersburg State Conservatory (class of Alexander Sandler) and became an assistant trainee there (under the guidance of the same teacher). Has taken part in masterclasses given by Andrei Diev, Grigory Gruzman, Pavel Nersessian and Alexander Mndoyants.
Prize-winner at the International Chopin Competition (Narva, 2016; 1st prize and prize of the European Union of Music Competitions for Youth), the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians (Astana, 2017; 2nd prize and special prize for the best performance of a work by Bach), the International Competition for Young Pianists Astana Piano Passion (2017; 3rd prize), the All-Russian Music Competition (Moscow, 2018; 3rd prize), the All-Russian Competition Young Talents of Russia (Moscow, 2019; 2nd prize), the All-Russian Inter-institutional Competition Piano Today at the St Petersburg Conservatory (2020; 1st prize), the International Piano Competition City of Vigo (Spain, 2021; 1st prize), the International FRANZ LISZT Piano Competition Weimar–Bayreuth (2021; special prize), the Rachmaninoff International Competition for Pianists, Composers and Conductors (Moscow, 2022; 3rd prize and Bronze Medal), the XVII International Tchaikovsky Competition (Moscow – St Petersburg, 2023; 3rd prize and Bronze Medal); diploma recipient at the International Competition for Young Pianists Grand Piano Competition (Moscow, 2016).
Grant recipient of the Artis Futura Foundation (since 2021).
Has appeared at prestigious venues in Moscow, St Petersburg (including the Mariinsky Theatre and the St Petersburg Philharmonia), other Russian towns/cities and abroad. Has participated in the Mariinsky International Piano Festival (2016, 2017), the International Tchaikovsky Youth Festival (2018, 2019), the International Sergei Rachmaninoff Festival White Lilac (2018), the festivals St Petersburg Musical Spring (2020), International Conservatoire Week (2020), Silver Lyre (2020), Pianissimo (2022, 2023), Denis Matsuev Presents: Dialogue of Generations (2023).
Has collaborated with the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia (Svetlanov Symphony Orchestra), the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tatarstan National Symphony Orchestra, the St Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra, the St Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra Classica, the St Petersburg Northern Sinfonia Orchestra, the State Symphony Orchestra Novaya Rossiya and the St Petersburg State Capella Symphony Orchestra. In February 2023 he gave a recital at Brussels’ Flagey.
Participant in programmes of the St Petersburg Music House since 2016.
Assistant teacher at the Department of Special Piano at the St Petersburg Conservatory since 2024.
