Valentin Bakoyan


Lighting designer

Valentin Bakoyan was born in Yaroslavl in 1986. In 2017 he graduated from the Russian State Institute of Performing Arts, where he studied with Vladimir Lukasevich and Yevgeny Ganzburg.

From 2017 to 2018 Valentin Bakoyan taught “Directors: working with a lighting designer” at Yaroslavl State Theatre Institute (course of People’s Artist of Russia Alexander Kuzin).

Has created the lighting designs for productions at theatres in Moscow, St Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Yaroslavl, Novouralsk, Seversk, Novokuznetsk, Orenburg and other cities and towns. Has collaborated with the Gorky Moscow Art Theatre (The Song of Igor’s Campaign, The Mythical Husband and His Dog), St Petersburg’s Theatre on Vasilyevsky Island (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Woe from Wit, Orpheus Descending, Three Sisters, The Event, Sunset Rock’n’Roll, Love, The Harvest), the St Petersburg Theatre of Musical Comedy (Alice and Wonderland), St Petersburg’s Musical Theatre Carambole (Road to the Emerald City), Novouralsk’s Music, Drama and Comedy Theatre (Die Fledermaus, Monte Cristo. I Am Edmond Dantès, Ice Palace) and the Novokuznetsk Drama Theatre (Shakespeare in Hollywood) among others. In 2021 he was an assistant to Gleb Filshtinsky who worked on the musical Dear Mr Smith directed by Alexey Frandetti at St Petersburg’s theatre Comedian’s Refuge.

At the Mariinsky Theatre Valentin Bakoyan has created the lighting designs for new productions of The Love for Three Oranges (2022) and The Demon (2023).

Member of the Union of Theatre Workers of the Russian Federation (since 2018).
