Yegor Kartashov


Lighting Designer

Yegor Kartashov was born in Leningrad in 1975. He graduated from the St Petersburg State Theatre Arts Academy, specialising in stage design technology (1997). That same year, he joined the Mariinsky Theatre’s lighting department as a lighting effects expert. She trained under Vladimir Lukasevich, lighting designer and Head of Department, as his assistant during the Mariinsky Theatre’s on-tour performances at many venues around the globe. As an assistant, he also worked with lighting designer Damir Ismagilov on the productions at the Mariinsky Theatre, as well as the St Petersburg Lensoviet Theatre on the musical Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (2009). His most recent projects include working as a lighting designer on the production of Salawat Yulayev at the Ufa Opera and Ballet Theatre (2016) together with director Irkin Gabitov.

Since the opening of the second stage of the Mariinsky Theatre, Kartashov has been Head of Lighting Department at the Mariinsky II. Over the course of several seasons, Kartashov has worked as a lighting designer on the adaptations of the Mariinsky Theatre’s productions for the new stage, including such operas as Der fliegende Holländer, Khovanshchina, Turandot, La traviata, Elektra, Rigoletto, The Gambler, War and Peace, and such ballets as Cinderella, Romeo and Juliet, The Firebird, Le Parc, and The Nutcracker (Mihail Chemiakin’s production; Kartashov worked directly with Chemiakin) and many others. As a lighting designer, Kartashov worked on the capital revival of Lohengrin (directed by Alexander Maskalin, set design by Yevgeny Lysyk).
