Irina Vtornikova was born in Rostov-on-Don in 1975. In 2009 she graduated from St Petersburg State Theatre Arts Academy.

From 1997 to 2023 Irina Vtornikova worked at the Rostov State Musical Theatre (prior to 1999 the Rostov State Musical Comedy Theatre), heading the artistic production department during 2011–2019 and being Principal Lighting Designer between 2019 and 2023. Has designed for productions of Hamlet, The Sleeping Beauty, Juno and Avos, Prince Igor, Iolanta, Le Corsaire, Le nozze di Figaro, The Nutcracker, Faust, Swan Lake, Paganini, Eugene Onegin, Oresteia, La traviata, Die Fledermaus, Giovanna d’Arco, The Queen of Spades, Carmina Burana, Khovanshchina, La Esmeralda, Spartacus, Pagliacci and Turandot among others.

Since 2023 the artist has been Principal Lighting Designer at the Bryantsev Young Spectators’ Theatre (St Petersburg), where she worked on The Meek One. A Cut, Happy Days, Barbara the Fair with the Silken Hair and Uncle Fyodor, His Dog and His Cat.

Has also created lighting designs for productions by companies including the State Academic Maly Theatre in Moscow (Don Juan), the Kolobov Novaya Opera Theatre of Moscow (Prince Igor), the Moscow State Nikitsky Gate Theatre (Hamlet, The Captain’s Daughter, Sherlock Holmes, The Murderer and Amadeus), the Moscow State Opera and Ballet Theatre for Young Audience named after Natalia Sats (The Princess and the Pea, Swan Lake, Aelita and The Sleeping Beauty), the St Petersburg Chamber Opera (The Rape of Lucretia, Boris Godunov, Suor Angelica, Don Giovanni, Tosca, La bohème, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Cavalleria rusticana, Les Pêcheurs de perles, Not Love Alone and Faust among others), the Sverdlovsk State Academic Musical Comedy Theatre (Dead Souls, The Marriage of Krechinsky, Fiddler on the Roof and The White Guard among others), the Yekaterinburg (Cinderella) and Novosibirsk (Boris Godunov, Falstaff and Iolanta) opera and ballet theatres, the Novosibirsk Musical Comedy Theatre (now the Novosibirsk Musical Theatre; The Dawns Here Are Quiet, La Vie parisienne, Roman Holiday and Foma among others), the Samara Opera and Ballet Theatre (Mozart and Salieri, The Sleeping Beauty, Aida, Tosca and Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk among others), the Astrakhan State Opera and Ballet Theatre (The Queen of Spades, Boris Godunov, Eugene Onegin, Otello, The Tsar’s Bride and La Damnation de Faust among others), the Bashkir State Opera and Ballet Theatre (The Maid of Orleans, The Tsar’s Bride, Faust, Attila, Don Giovanni and Vita Nuova among others) and the Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus (The Snow Maiden, Kashchey the Immortal, The Little Prince, Anna Karenina, The Queen of Spades and Prince Igor among others).
In 2014 she designed for a production by Yuri Alexandrov based on Tchaikovsky’s opera Cherevichki at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari (Italy).

At the Mariinsky Theatre Irina Vtornikova has created lighting designs for new productions of The Maid of Orleans (2021), L’italiana in Algeri (2022), Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (2023), Les Huguenots (2024).

Has been a nominee on several occasions for Russia’s Golden Mask National Theatre Award.
