Mariinsky Theatre Guest Soloist
Maxim Bulatov was born in Chelyabinsk. In 1996 he graduated with honours from the Odessa State Conservatory named after A.V. Nezhdanova (class of Vasily Navrotsky).
During 1997–1999 the singer was a soloist at the Chelyabinsk Opera and Ballet Theatre, performing such roles as Ruslan (Ruslan and Lyudmila), Don Bartolo (Le nozze di Figaro), Dr Dulcamara (L’elisir d’amore) and Ferrando (Il trovatore). He also appeared at concert halls in Odessa, Saratov, Chelyabinsk, Volgograd, Kaliningrad, Nizhny Novgorod and Novosibirsk.
Was a soloist of the Opera and Ballet Theatre of the St Petersburg Conservatory, where he sang Narbal in Les Troyens and the title role in The Repentance of Faust, based on Alfred Schnittke’s cantata The History of Doctor Johann Faust. Since 2001 Maxim Bulatov has been a soloist with the St Petersburg Concert, appearing in productions such as The Phantom of the Opera: Déjà Vu (Leporello, Escamillo), Prima la musica e poi le parole (Maestro) and Camellias for la traviata (Giorgio Germont, Baron Douphol).
In 2007 he performed Alidoro in La Cenerentola at the Zazerkalye St Petersburg State Children’s Musical Theatre. At the Yekaterinburg Opera and Ballet Theatre the singer appeared as Ruslan (Ruslan and Lyudmila), and at the Krasnodar Musical Theatre he portrayed Eugene Onegin.
Maxim Bulatov made his Mariinsky Theatre debut in 2009, performing the role of the Demon in Rubinstein’s eponymous opera.

His repertoire also includes Te Deum by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Bach’s Matthäus-Passion and Johannes-Passion, Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem, Rossini’s Stabat Mater and Petite messe solennelle, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Fauré’s Requiem and Britten’s War Requiem.
In 2021 he took part in the premiere production of Fidelio at St Petersburg’s Hermitage Theatre, performing the role of Don Fernando.
Has collaborated with such conductors as Valery Gergiev, Tugan Sokhiev, Vladimir Ziva, Sergei Stadler, Eduard Serov, Nicola Giuliani, Shungo Moriyama and Gintaras Rinkevičius. Has also given solo recitals at the Small Hall of the St Petersburg Philharmonia.
He has toured to Italy, Spain, Japan and Switzerland.
