One vocally dramatic flash in the performance came with the scene at the inn on the Lithuanian border with Varlaam the monk performed by Denis Begansky, a soloist with the Mariinsky Academy of Young Singers. He succeeded in portraying just what elemental power lies hidden within a semi-literate people as soon as some extreme situation arises.

Denis Begansky was born in the town of Borisovo. In 2006 he graduated from the college of the Belorussian Academy of Music and in 2013 he graduated from the Russian Herzen Pedagogical University (class of Alexei Steblyanko, People's Artist of the RSFSR).
Joined the Mariinsky Academy of Young Opera Singers in 2013. Has toured with the company to Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Great Britain, Italy and Germany. Has participated in the Baltic Sea Festival, the BBC Proms, a festival of the Russian National Orchestra, Opera for All, Stars of the White Nights and the Moscow Easter Festival.
Has appeared under such conductors as Leon Botstein, Vincent de Cort, Joseph Olefirowicz, Nikolaj Znaider, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Valery Gergiev among others.
Since 2023 he has been a soloist with the Mariinsky Opera.
