Mikhail Vekua was born in the city of Ochamchire (Abkhazia). Graduated from the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory in 2004 and completed a postgraduate study there in 2007 (class of Professor Alexei Martynov).
From 2002 to 2011 he was a soloist with the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Music Theatre.

Mikhail made his Mariinsky Theatre debut in 2012 as Loge (Das Rheingold).
Joined the Mariinsky Opera Company in 2013.

At the Mariinsky Theatre he has sung at premieres of The Queen of Spades (2015), Samson et Dalila (2016), Pagliacci (2021, Primorsky Stage), Christmas Eve (2021), Benvenuto Cellini (2021), Les Contes d’Hoffmann (2021), Tannhäuser (2021), Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (2023), Ariadne auf Naxos (2024) and at the Russian premiere of Gubaidulina’s oratorio Über Liebe und Hass (2018).

In 2013 he has appeared as Orestes in the American premiere of Taneyev’s Oresteia at the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College (New York State).

Mikhail has sung as Siegmund in a concert performance of Wagner’s Die Walküre under the baton of Kent Nagano at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall (2010) and – on Mariinsky Opera tours – as Siegfried in the eponymous opera in Birmingham (2014), as Loge in Das Rheingold at the Edinburgh International Festival (2016) and the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall (2017), as Siegfried (Siegfried), Siegmund, Loge (2018) and Parsifal (2019) at the Philharmonie de Paris. In 2024 he has portrayed the Pretender (Boris Godunov) in the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia’s production at the Mariinsky Theatre, and Vakula the Smith (Christmas Eve) in the Mariinsky Theatre’s production at the Bolshoi Theatre.

Frequently performs in recitals. He has appeared at the Grand and Small halls of the Moscow Conservatory, the Grand and Small halls of the St Petersburg Philharmonia and the Armorial Hall of the State Hermitage. Has performed at the Chaliapin Festival in Kazan. As a guest soloist he has sung at the Gran Teatre del Liceu and at the Metropolitan Opera as well as in Italy, Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Austria, Cyprus, Estonia, Lithuania, North and South Korea, China, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and Kazakhstan.
