Ekaterina Gubanova was born in Moscow. She began her music studies as a pianist and choral conductor. Studied vocals as an opera soloist at the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory and the Sibelius Academy (Helsinki), in addition to participating in a youth programme at the Royal Opera House (Covent Garden).

Has appeared at the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House (Covent Garden), the Vienna State Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Semperoper Dresden, the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Madrid’s Teatro Real, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, the Greek National Opera, the Sydney Opera House and the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia among other venues. In 2005 critics heaped praise on her interpretation of the role of Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde at the Opéra national de Paris. Ekaterina Gubanova has subsequently appeared in that role in Baden-Baden, Rotterdam, again in Paris, New York, Berlin, Tokyo, Salzburg, St Petersburg, Munich and Buenos Aires under such conductors as Daniel Barenboim, Valery Gergiev, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Semyon Bychkov, Sir Simon Rattle, Zubin Mehta, Myung-Whun Chung and Kent Nagano. Under the baton of Daniel Barenboim she has appeared as Fricka in Das Rheingold and Die Walküre at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin and the Teatro alla Scala, also singing that role under Kirill Petrenko at the Bayerische Staatsoper. In the summer of 2021 she sang the part of Venus (Tannhäuser staged by Tobias Kratzer) at the Bayreuth Festival.

The singer’s repertoire includes: Adalgisa (Norma), Giovanna Seymour (Anna Bolena), Giulietta (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), Jocasta (Stravinsky’s Œdipus rex) and Jocaste (Enescu’s Œdipe), the Princess (Dvořák’s Rusalka), Charlotte (Werther), Clitemnestre (Gluck's Iphigénie en Aulide), Judith (Bluebeard’s Castle), the mezzo-soprano parts in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Berlioz’ symphonie dramatique Roméo et Juliette and Rossini’s Stabat Mater. Ekaterina Gubanova’s concert repertoire also includes Gustav Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, Des Knaben Wunderhorn, Rückert-Lieder and Second and Third symphonies, French and Russian music.
Made her Mariinsky Theatre debut in 2006 in Eugene Onegin.

Participated in a recording of the tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen with the Mariinsky Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev for the Mariinsky label.

In 2020 she received the Casta Diva opera prize in the category “Singer of the Year”.
