Ambrogio Maestri was born in Pavia in 1970. He received his initial musical training as a pianist before pursuing vocal studies under the tutelage of Umberto Grilli.
In 1999 the singer made his debut at Washington National Opera. International acclaim followed in 2001 with his portrayal of the title role in Falstaff (conducted by Riccardo Muti and directed by Giorgio Strehler) at the Teatro alla Scala and Busseto’s Teatro Giuseppe Verdi. He subsequently became a regular presence at the Teatro alla Scala, adding further Verdi roles to his repertoire, including Iago (Otello), Renato (Un ballo in maschera), Don Carlo (La forza del destino) and Giorgio Germont (La traviata). Mr Maestri has graced many of the world’ most prestigious opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House (Covent Garden), the Opéra national de Paris, the Wiener Staatsoper, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Bayerische Staatsoper, the Semperoper Dresden, the Staatsoper Hamburg, Madrid’s Teatro Real, Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu, the Opernhaus Zürich, Venice’s Teatro La Fenice, the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Naples’ Teatro di San Carlo, Turin’s and Parma’s Teatro Regio, Palermo’s Teatro Massimo, San Francisco Opera, Lisbon’s Teatro Nacional de São Carlos and Tokyo’s Bunka Kaikan. He is also a sought-after performer at prominent festivals such as the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and the Salzburg Festival. His extensive repertoire encompasses a wide range of baritone roles, including Count di Luna (Il trovatore), Amonasro (Aida), Alfio (Cavalleria rusticana), Tonio (Pagliacci), Dulcamara (L’elisir d’amore), Baron Scarpia (Tosca), Rolando (La battaglia di Legnano), Simon Boccanegra, Rigoletto, Nabucco and Don Pasquale. In March 2024 the artist made his debut at the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia, singing the part of Michonnet in Adriana Lecouvreur.
At the Mariinsky Theatre he performed for the first time in November 2024, appearing as Falstaff.
Has collaborated with eminent conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Chailly, Daniele Gatti, Daniel Oren, Fabio Luisi, Sir Antonio Pappano, Christian Thielemann, Jeffrey Tate, James Levine, Nello Santi, Marcello Viotti, Marco Armiliato, Gianandrea Noseda and Daniel Harding. Has also worked with many of the world’s leading opera directors, including Franco Zeffirelli, Robert Carsen, Graham Vick, Peter Stein, Robert Wilson and Laurent Pelly.
In 2012 he appeared in Ferzan Özpetek’s film Magnifica presenza (“Magnificent Presence”).
