Alexander Gontsa was born in Minsk. Graduated from the Minsk State College of Music named after M. Glinka (class of Adam Murzich), and subsequently he studied at the Rimsky-Korsakov St Petersburg State Conservatory (class of Irina Bogacheva). Has participated in masterclasses held by Galina Vishnevskaya, Dmitry Vdovin, Sergei Leiferkus, Mikhail Lansky, Tito Capobianco and Neil Shicoff.

From 2010 to 2013 Alexander Gontsa was a member of the Aleko Drama Theatre in St Petersburg, and during 2013–2014 – of the Mikhailovsky Theatre. Subsequently he was a soloist with the St Petersburg Chamber Opera.

From 2016 to 2019 Alexander Gontsa worked as a soloist at the Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. In 2019 he made his St Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre debut, appearing in the concert In Ensemble with the Composer. Eduard Kiprsky and performing two works by Kiprsky – the song Karussell to verses by Rilke and the world premiere of Drowned, folksy tale after Pushkin. In 2024 the artist debuted in St Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre production, portraying Robert in Iolanta. Since 2024 he has been a soloist with St Petersburg’s Mariinsky Opera Company.

His repertoire also includes Schaunard (La bohème), Belcore (L’elisir d’amore), Count Tomsky (The Queen of Spades), Silvio (Pagliacci), Edwin (Die Csárdásfürstin), the Prince (Asafyev’s Cinderella), Aleko in the eponymous opera, and the baritone part in Viktor Pleshak’s oratorio The Song of the Merchant Kalashnikov. His chamber repertoire includes song cycles by Schumann (Dichterliebe), Schubert (Winterreise), Glinka (Farewell to St Petersburg), Musorgsky (Songs and Dances of Death), Anton Rubinstein (Persian Songs), Valery Gavrilin (German Notebook No. 1) and Yuri Falik (Songs of Béranger).

He has collaborated with conductors such as Pavel Smelkov, Mikhail Tatarnikov, Andrey Anikhanov, Dmitry Khokhlov, Viktor Bokman and Peter Feranec. Has toured with concert programmes to Germany, Poland, Belarus and the Baltic states.
