Svetlana Volkova studied music at the Leningrad State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire. In 1974 after graduating, she joined the Maly Musorgsky Theatre of Opera and Ballet (today the Mikhailovsky Theatre), where she appeared as Natasha (Rusalka), Tatiana (Eugene Onegin), Zemfira (Aleko), Maria Stuart (Slonimsky's Maria Stuart), Katherina (The Taming of the Shrew) and Zerlina (Don Giovanni).
Svetlana Volkova became a soloist with the Mariinsky Theatre in 1990.

Svetlana Volkova has performed lead roles in the films La belle Hélène (Telefilm), Aleko (with Aleko performed by Yevgeny Nesterenko; Lenfilm) and Perikola (Lenfilm).
