Jonathan Roozeman was born in Helsinki in 1997. He was a student of Martti Rousi at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, and in 2020 he graduated from Kronberg Academy (class of Frans Helmerson). Jonathan won 2nd prize at the National Cello Competition in Amsterdam (2012) and 6th prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and St Petersburg (2015, youngest candidate).
He has worked with the Mariinsky Orchestra, the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the State Chamber Orchestra Moscow Virtuosi, the philharmonie zuidnederland, the Tokyo New City Orchestra, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tapiola Sinfonietta orchestra, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra, the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and he has collaborated with conductors such as Valery Gergiev, Christoph Eschenbach, Michael Sanderling, Sakari Oramo, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Osmo Vänskä, Dima Slobodeniouk, Jukka-Pekka Saraste and Nikolay Alexeev.
Jonathan took part in the Stars of the White Nights festival in St Petersburg, the festivals in Tammisaari, Mikkeli, Oulu, Turku and Joroinen (Finland), the Baltic Sea Festival in Stockholm and the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival. He was Artist in Residence with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, which profiled him in concertos including those by Vieuxtemps and Shostakovich as well as chamber performances, and toured to Beijing for the Super Cello festival performing Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1 with the Brussels Chamber Orchestra. He has appeared at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre, the Konzerthaus Berlin and New York’s Lincoln Center among other venues.
Jonathan plays a David Tecchler cello (1707) on loan from the Finnish Cultural Foundation. His bow is made by Jean Pierre Marie Persoit in Paris (1850).
