Angela Contreras Reyes was born in Bogota (Colombia). In 2010, she graduated from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (Conservatory of Music, class of Alexander Sanko). While still a student, she took part in master-classes of Gary Karr, Tim Cobb, Jeff Bradetich, and Ivan Stankov. She was also the leader of the double bass group of the Conservatory’s orchestra for five years. Prize-winner at several national competitions in Colombia.
In 2008, 2009 and 2010, she was a participant of the programme of the Youth Orchestra of the Americas, which performed under the baton of Carlos Miguel Prieto, Benjamin Zander, Valery Gergiev, and Jean Pascal.
She was a soloist with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá in 2011. From 2011 to 2013, she studied for her Master’s Degree at the Juilliard School in New York City (class of Eugene Levinson) and received Dame Kiri Te Kanawa’s scholarship. In the year she received her Master’s Degree, she made her debut as a soloist at the Weill Recital Hall of Carnegie Hall and took part in the Pacific Music Festival in Japan, where she performed together with Harold Robinson and Bogusław Furtok. The musician had an internship with Harold Robinson, leader of the double bass group of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Since 2015 Angela Contreras Reyes has been deputy leader of the double bass group of the Mariinsky Orchestra.
