Born in Leningrad in 1971, Alexei Pozin received his first music training at the age of five. Graduated from a music school, he experimented in different genres from choir singing to the avant-garde and rock music, learning also new instruments including guitar, trumpet, recorder and horn. Following the advice of his father, hornist Viktor Pozin, he continued his musical education at the Musorgsky College of Music and at the Rimsky-Korsakov St Petersburg State Conservatory (graduated in 1998; class of Professor Andrei Glukhov), also undertaking an assistant-traineeship at the conservatory.
In 1992–1999 he was a principal of the St Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra Classica and since 1999 has been a member of the Mariinsky Orchestra where he currently holds the assistant principal horn position.
Prize-winner at the Russian and international music competitions including the Rimsky-Korsakov All-Russian Open Competition for Woodwind and Percussion Players (St Petersburg, 2001; 3rd prize), the ARD International Music Competition (Munich, 2001; 3rd prize as a member of a woodwind quintet from the Mariinsky Theatre), the Lieksa Brass Week (Finland, 2009; 2nd prize as a member of the Mariinsky Theatre Brass Quintet). Alexei Pozin combines his orchestral work with chamber and solo playing as well as with composition. In 2010 he entered the St Petersburg Conservatory as a student of Professor Gennady Banshchikov’s composition class and graduated in 2015. He is author of chamber and orchestral music as well as two operas and three ballet projects.
