Prize-winner at the International Jascha Heifetz Competition (Vilnius, 2009, 2nd prize and Special Prize), the International Rodolfo Lipizer Competition (Gorizia, 2008, 3rd prize and Special Prize), the International Andrea Postacchini Competition (Fermo, 2007, 1st prize and the International Pablo Saraste Competition (Pamplona, 2009, 3rd prize and Audience Award).
Born in 1990 in a musical family. At the age of five he began to study the violin under Galina Turchaninova. Studied at the School of Music of the Academic College of Music of the Moscow Conservatoire (class of Marina Keselman) and from 2005–2011 at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne (class of Viktor Tretiakov).
He is currently studying in Munich under Ana Chumachenco and in Salzburg under Rainer Schmidt. Has taken part in master-classes given by Kolja Blacher, Donald Weilerstein, Boris Garlitsky, Gidon Kremer, Midori, Vadim Repin, Christian Tetzlaff, Zarius Shikhmurzaeva and Harald Schoneweg.
Grant-recipient of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation (2003) and the foundations Freunde Junger Musiker (2009, Germany) and Musik und Jugend (Lichtenstein, 2013). In September 2008 he won the Pablo Saraste Prize (Madrid).
Has taken part in international festivals and toured to Russia, Spain, Croatia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, Spain, Lichtenstein, Bulgaria, Turkey and Ukraine.
Has given recitals at the Moscow and St Petersburg Conservatoires, the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, the Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, the Palau de la Música in Valencia, the Auditorio in Saragossa, the Teatro delle Muse in Ancona and philharmonic halls in Munich, Cologne, Vilnius and Dubrovnik among other cities.
Has appeared with the Svetlanov State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia, the Acadeemic Symphony Orchestra of the Moscow Philharmonic, the New Russia State Symphony Orchestra, the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia, the Moscow State Academic Symphony Orchestra under Pavel Kogan, the St Petersburg Academic Symphony Orchestra, the Dubrovnik and Navarra Symphony Orchestras, the National Youth Orchestra of Spain, the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, the State Chamber Orchestra of the Republic of Belarus and the Montenegro Symphony Orchestra.
Has collaborated with conductors including Alexander Sladkovsky, Andrei Danilov, Stanislav Kochanovsky, Yuri Simonov, Sergei Skripka, Alexander Slutsky, Kevin Griffiths, Juozas Domarkas, Bojan Sudjic, Maria Eklund, Roberto Fores Veses and Mikhail Agrest. Has appeared with musicians including Wen-Sinn Yang, Manuel Fischer-Dieskau, Rainer Schmidt, Ana Chumachenco, Yury Favorin, Philipp Kopachevsky, Artyom Dervoed and Kian Soltani. In recent years he has performed recitals and together with his brother, the violinist Ivan Pochekin.
Makes successful appearances at the subscriptions Young Talents, Romantic Concerti, The Golden Age of the Violin and The Great Romantics at the Moscow Philharmonic.
Engagements for the 2014–2015 season include appearances in the Russian Ministry of Culture and the Moscow Philharmonic’s programme Stars of the 21st Century (Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Omsk, Samara, Ryazan, Tomsk, Khabarovsk), tours throughout Europe, a debut at the Herkulessaal in Munich and performances with the Svetlanov State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia, the Ural Academic Philharmonic Orchestra and the State Symphony Orchestra of the Republic of Tatarstan.
The violinist’s concerts have been broadcast on Radio Orpheus, Kultura TV, Bavarian Radio (Germany), Montenegro National TV and Radio Clásica (Spain).
Mikhail Pochekin performs instruments crafted by his father Yuri Pochekin. In February 2010 on the initiative of the Conservatorio de Madrid he performed the “Ex-Bossier” violin made by Stradivarius which once belonged to Pablo Saraste.
