Alexander Trostiansky was born in 1972 in a family of musicians. He studied violin under Boris Trostiansky, Matvei Liberman and Irina Bochkova.
Prize-winner at the Premio Paganini international competition in Genoa (1990), the Centre d’Arts Orford International Competition in Canada (1996, 1st prize), the Franz Schubert and 20th Century Music Competition in Graz (1997, 3rd prize) and the International Tchaikovsky Competition (1998).
Has taken part in festivals including Moscow Autumn, December Evenings, Musik an St. Michaelis (Hamburg) and the Oleg Kagan Musikfest Kreuth.
Has produced numerous recordings for Radio 1. Works with the recording studios Vista Vera, Chandos, NAXOS, Dowani and Egan Records. In June 2005 he recorded sonatas by Galina Ustvolskaya and Valentin Silvestrov with pianist Alexei Lyubimov for ECM).
The musician has appeared in over seventy Russian towns and cities and twenty-five countries internationally. Trostiansky has given recitals at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatoire, the Great Hall of the St Petersburg Philharmonic, the De Doelen Concert Hall and the Jurriaanse Hall in Rotterdam, the Linbury Studio Theatre of the Royal Opera, Covent Garden (London), the Goetheanum in Dornach, the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, Schoenberg Hall in Los Angeles, the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall (New York).
The violinist’s repertoire includes chamber music and over twenty violin concerti. Trostiansky frequently performs works by 20th century composers, several of which were dedicated to him.
In January 2004 Trostiansky performed Paganini’s twenty-four Caprices during one single concert.
The violinist has collaborated with such musicians as Alexander Rudin, Alexei Lyubimov, Natalia Gutman, Yuli Turovsky, Alexander Melnikov, Alexei Goribol, Tatiana Kuindzhi, Denisе Shapovalov and Jean-Guihen Queyras.
From 2001–2002 he was a jury expert for the Window on Russia competition.
Since 1997 Trostiansky has taught at the Moscow State Conservatoire. Regularly gives master-classes throughout Russia and abroad (Great Britain, France, South Korea, Kazakhstan).
