Niklas Walentin, born in 1994, is a Danish-Swiss violinist who began to play at the age of six. He has appeared at Carnegie Hall in New York, the Philharmonic in St Petersburg and the Conservatory of Music in Beijing.
Niklas Walentin is a member of the talented young piano trio, Trio Vitruvi, which won the Danish Radio Chamber Music Competition in 2014. Since August 2015 Niklas Walentin has been studying for an Advanced Diploma as a soloist at the Royal Danish Academy of Music under Professor Eszter Haffner. At the same time, he is also studying for an Advanced Diploma as a soloist at the Royal Danish Academy of Music with the Trio Vitruvi (class of Professor Tim Frederiksen). Previously, he has studied for a Master’s Degree in the Performing Arts under Professor Sergej Krylov (Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano) and a Master’s Degree under professor Eszter Haffner at the Royal Danish Academy of Music.
In March 2014 Niklas Walentin’s first CD was released – Solo Violin, featuring works by Bach, Paganini, Ysaÿe, Nielsen, Reger and Nørholm. Hiss second CD was released in June 2015, with a recital in the Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, including works by Carl Nielsen.
In 2013 he received the Danish Radio P2 Talent Award. Prior to that, Niklas Walentin received the Sonning Talent Prize and the Jacob Gade Talent Prize for young musicians. In 2013 Niklas Walentin received the Grand Prize from the Jacob Gade Foundation. He was named “Soloist of the Year – 2013” by the Royal Danish Academy of Music. A special award, the Møn Prize, was established in 2013 for Niklas Walentin.
In May 2013 a prestigious scholarship was presented to Niklas Walentin, and he received the two-year scholarship The Young Elite from the Danish Arts Council. Most recently Niklas Walentin has been awarded the Danish Critics Award, and in 2016 will perform at Copenhagen Concert Hall in Tivoli thanks to this award.
Niklas Walentin has participated in numerous competitions, winning him 1st prize at the Jacob Gade Competition for Young Violinists and the Gold Medal at the Berlingske Tidende Classical Music Competition in 2007. In 2012 Niklas Walentin was triple winner at the IX Carl Nielsen International Violin Competition (2nd prize), the Carl Nielsen Prize for the best performance of works by Carl Nielsen and the prize for best performance of a contemporary work (Ib Nørholm’s Ménage à trois, which was composed specially for this competition. In 2012 he was also the first prize-winner at the Copenhagen Summer Festival’s Talent Prize competition.
The highly esteemed Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik Foundation has given its support to Niklas Walentin. In grateful thanks, he has performed for the queen and the prince on several occasions. Niklas Walentin has been supported by the Oticon Foundation, the Mærsk Foundation, the Augustinus Fondation, the Léonie Sonnings Fondation, the Jacob Gade Foundation for Talented Young Mucisians, the Anker Buchs Award, Odd Fellow Loge 78, the Solistforeningen af 1921, the Margrethe Axelsen’s Foundation, the Møn Prize and the Jacob Gade Foundation Great Prize. In 2014 Niklas Walentin received the Gladsaxe Kommunes Musikpreis for a concert together with the Copenhagen Philharmonic.
