Alexey Frandetti was born in Tashkent in 1984. In 2001 he graduated from the Tashkent State Higher School of National Dance and Choreography, at the same time studying under Mark Weil at the studio of the Ilkhom Theatre; worked as a presenter for Europa Plus radio (Tashkent). Subsequently studied at Moscow Art Theatre School and in 2006 graduated from the Faculty of Acting at the Russian State University of Cinematography named after S. Gerasimov (workshop of Igor Yasulovich).
Has appeared in musicals at the Moscow Operetta Theatre, performing the roles of the Prince (Cinderella), Romeo (Romeo and Juliet), Fanfan (Fanfan la Tulipe), the Porter (Ricochet) and Mowgli in the eponymous production. From 2007 to 2010 he was with the Moscow Pushkin Drama Theatre, where he performed lead roles in productions of Lend Me a Tenor! (Max), Chain Letter (the Count; based on Fernando Krapp Wrote Me This Letter by Tankred Dorst) and Phèdre (Hippolyte). In 2009 he performed the role of Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet at the Stanislavsky Drama Theatre (Moscow). In the 2010–11 season he took on the role of Ramon, the leading anti-hero in the musical Zorro, at the Moscow Palace of Youth, appearing in over one hundred and twenty performances in eight months. Has also performed at Moscow’s Musical Theatre (Misha in Mikhail Shvydkoy and Alexey Kortnev’s production of Times Are Not Chosen (2012)).
As a director he has staged numerous productions at various theatre venues in Russia, among them Spring Awakening (together with Kirill Serebrennikov; Gogol Centre), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat (Karambol Children Musical Theatre, St Petersburg), Viva la mamma (Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre), An O. Henry Christmas (Moscow Pushkin Drama Theatre), Bernarda Alba, The Mikado; or, The Town of Titipu, Evita and Casanova (Musical Comedy Theatre, Yekaterinburg), Rigoletto (Ural Opera Ballet), Pride and Prejudice (Moscow Art Academic Theatre of A.P. Chekhov), The Tale of Tsar Saltan, Il viaggio a Reims (concert version) and The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. Le Carnaval des animaux (Bolshoi Theatre of Russia), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and The Last Five Years (Taganka Theatre), Romeo VS Juliet XX Years Later (Moscow Operetta Theatre), Hipsters (Theatre of Nations), Cabaret (Globe Novosibirsk Academic Youth Theatre) and Dear Mr Smith (Comedian’s Refuge Drama Theatre, St Petersburg) among others. Wrote the libretto for and directed the ballet Gabrielle CHANEL by Ilya Demutsky (MuzArts theatre company, Moscow) and wrote the Russian text of the libretto and poetry for the musical Jekyll & Hyde at the St Petersburg Theatre of Musical Comedy. In 2020 he staged the world’s first Instagram musical – My Daddy-Long-Legs (based on Jean Webster’s novel Daddy-Long-Legs), receiving the Theatre-Goer’s Star award for “Best artistic response to the pandemic” and the Audience Award of the online festival Digital Theatre.
Has made appearances in several films, among them Marina Lyubakova’s Cruelty (2007), Alexander Borodyansky’s Fabergé Shadows (2008), Anders Banke’s Breaking News (2009), Pavel Lungin’s Tsar (2009) and Sergey Taramaev and Lyubov Lvova’s Winter Journey (2012), in addition to numerous television series. On three occasions he won Russia’s Golden Mask National Theatre Award in the category “Best work by a stage director in operetta/musicals” (An O. Henry Christmas (2016), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2018) and Hipsters (2020)).
