His opera productions include: The Turn of the Screw and The Fairy Queen (Glyndebourne); The Tempest, Kát'a Kabanová, Lucio Silla, Le nozze di Figaro and The Letter (Santa Fe); Tosca (Royal Opera House); A Child of our Time (English National Opera); and Elektra and Die Frau ohne Schatten (Mariinsky Theatre).
In 1990 he established the Almeida Theatre as a full-time producing house with Ian McDiarmid and was joint artistic director for twelve years. His productions there included When We Dead Awaken, All For Love, Medea (also West End, Broadway), Chatsky, The Showman, The School for Wives, Gangster No 1, Tartuffe, Hamlet (also Broadway), The Life of Galileo, The Rules of the Game, Ivanov, The Government Inspector, Naked (also West End) and The Tempest. He directed Richard II and Coriolanus for the Almeida at Gainsborough Studios, also touring them to New York and Tokyo.
In 1998 he opened a season for the Almeida at the Albery Theatre with Phèdre and Britannicus (both of which toured to New York), closing with Plenty. For the Almeida at King's Cross, he directed Lulu (also at the Kennedy Center, Washington DC), Platonov, Faith Healer and King Lear. Other theatre credits include Faith Healer (Broadway), Le Cid, Mother Courage and her Children, The False Servant and Oedipus (National Theatre), The Man of La Mancha (Broadway), Hamlet (Japan, London), Hecuba (Donmar Warehouse), Lear (Sheffield), As You Desire Me (London Playhouse) and a season at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket.
Forthcoming opera projects include Don Giovanni and The Turn of the Screw (Glyndebourne Festival) and The Fairy Queen (Opéra Comique, Paris, and BAM).
