Robert Carsen was born in Canada. Productions he has worked on include the operas Don Giovanni (La Scala), The Turn of the Screw (Theater an der Wien), Mitridate, re di Ponto (Théâtre La Monnaie and the Theater an der Wien), L’incoronazione di Poppea and Rinaldo (Glyndebourne), Salome (Turin, Madrid and Florence), Iphigénie en Tauride (Chicago, London, San Francisco, Madrid, Toronto), Candide (Théâtre du Châtelet, La Scala, English National Opera), Der Rosenkavalier (Salzburg) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Orlando, Die Zauberflöte and Semele (Aix-en-Provence). At the Grand Opéra in Paris he has staged the operas Manon Lescaut, Nabucco, I Capuletti e i Montecchi, Lohengrin, Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Alcina, Rusalka, Les Boréades, Capriccio and Tannhäuser. He has also directed plays, among them Nomade with Ute Lemper at the Théâtre du Châtelet (Paris), Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (Roundabout Theatre, New York) and Lady Windermere’s Fan (Old Vic, Bristol). Officier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of France and officer of the Order of Canada. Recipient of the Prix de la Critique française for his productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1992), Candide (2007) and Les Dialogues des carmélites (2011). On four occasions he has won the Abbiati Prize for productions of the operas Götterdämmerung (La Fenice, 2010), Les Dialogues des carmélites and Káťa Kabanová (La Scala, 2000 and 2007 respectively) and Fidelio (Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, 2003).
