To commemorate the birthday of Maya Plisetskaya the Mariinsky Theatre’s website is hosting an exhibition of photographs depicting the ballerina on the stage and in the Mariinsky Theatre.
For many years Maya Mikhailovna Plisetskaya was a friend of and frequent visitor to the Mariinsky Theatre. In turning to productions of ballet scores by Rodion Shchedrin that were created for Plisetskaya or dedicated to her, the theatre always found a wise counsellor and aide in Maya Plisetskaya. Together with her husband Rodion Shchedrin she frequently attended performances at the Mariinsky Theatre and was an honorary guest at numerous premieres, festivals and important theatre events.
In tribute to the memory of Maya Plisetskaya, on 18 November at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev will perform key works from the ballerina’s stage life. The performance will include the Adagietto from Symphony No 5 by Mahler, the music of which Roland Petit used to stage the ballet La Rose malade for Plisetskaya. There will be a performance of Ravel’s Boléro including a video recording from 1975 featuring Plisetskaya dancing Maurice Béjart’s choreography. The concert will conclude with the legendary Carmen-Suite, composed by Shchedrin on the basis of Bizet’s music specially for a ballet created for Plisetskaya by the choreographer Alberto Alonso.
In St Petersburg, tribute will be paid to Maya Plisetskaya on 27 December with a concert at the new Mariinsky Theatre. The same day at the Shchedrin Hall of the Mariinsky-II there begins a series of film screenings of art and documentary films, TV programmes and ballet films featuring Maya Plisetskaya. In December and January audiences will have the opportunity to see twelve screenings.
