Mehran Rouhani
Composer

Mehran Rouhani was born in 1946 in Tehran. He pursued his musical studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Tehran. Later received a full scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London, where he completed postgraduate studies, earning a Master of Music degree and undertaking advanced composition studies with Philip Cannon and Anthony Milner. During this time Mehran Rouhani also became acquainted with contemporary and advanced compositional techniques under the guidance of Sir Michael Tippett.

After completing his studies he returned to Iran and taught for two years at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Tehran and at the Tehran Conservatory of Music. Then Rouhani spent many years teaching music privately. In 2000 he returned to Great Britain and continued composing and teaching music. He now lives in London with his family.

Over the years Mehran Rouhani has composed numerous works, including five string quartets; four fantasy trios; the Piano Quintet; the Bassoon Quintet; eight symphonic poems, among them The Little Black Fish and Caspian Songs; the ballet The Sixth Day for large orchestra; the Clarinet Concerto; the Piano Concerto; the Iranian Serenade for classical orchestra; six works for string orchestra such as Nostalgia and Iranian; the Sonata for Flute and Guitar; the collection of Orientals, comprising three pieces for violin, viola, and cello; many piano works; both small and large-scale orchestral and vocal works such as the fantasy overture Bridge, the Sinfonietta Synthetical, and the Sheyda Fantasy, which was played by the Tehran Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Alexander (Ali) Rahbari.

Mehran Rouhani’s works have been performed in many countries, including Austria, Bulgaria, the USA, Canada, Australia, Germany and Great Britain. In 2016, commissioned by UNICEF, he composed Love and Peace Quotes for soprano and large orchestra. The work was performed the same year by his daughter and the Docklands Sinfonia at the Barbican Centre in London, conducted by Spencer Down.

The Persian Dance was composed by Mehran Rouhani in 2026 at the request of Alexander Rahbari and is dedicated to him.
